Students who submit their online application late or who submit their entry fee and proof-of-age document late will be assessed a $25 late fee through January 23, 2011.
NO APPLICATION MATERIALS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER January 23, 2011. Students who fail to meet this deadline will be automatically withdrawn from the competition on January 25, 2011. Students will not be assigned an audition time until their entry fee and proof-of-age document are received.

Competition Rules & Information
The Westside Music Foundation Robert Turner Piano Concerto Competition is open only to students who live in the West Los Angeles area, who study with a teacher who lives in the West Los Angeles area, or who is a member of the West Los Angeles Branch of the Music Teachers’ Association of California (MTAC-WLA). Entering students must have studied with his/her current teacher for at least six months prior to the competition. Previous winners of the Senior Category are ineligible. Previous winners of the Junior Category may enter the Senior Category.

Age eligibility is based on the student’s age as of February 1, 2011.
Students must be in grade 12 or lower. Proof-of-age document is required.

Each student must prepare one, and only one, movement of his/her selected concerto. The concerto movement (and, if applicable, cadenza) must be memorized. Teachers may enter as many students as they wish in either or both categories, but may only enter students in two of the three movements for each concerto. For each category, one winner will be selected for each of the three movements, and the winners will perform in a showcase concert with the Los Angeles Doctors Symphony Orchestra, under the musical direction of Dr. Ivan Shulman. The Westside Music Foundation will provide the accompanist on the day of the competition; students may not use their own accompanists. Although it is not required, the Westside Music Foundation encourages each student to rehearse with the accompanist prior to the competition. However, if a student chooses to rehearse with the accompanist in advance, the student/teacher will need to make and pay for those arrangements separately. The name and contact information for the accompanist(s) will be made available from the Concerto Competition Chair upon receipt of application form and entry fee check.

Winners will have at least three rehearsals with full orchestra (dates & times to be announced).

A $50 non-refundable entry fee (payable to WESTSIDE MUSIC FOUNDATION) and a photocopy of a proof-of-age document (birth certificate, student I.D. (with birth date), passport, or driver’s license) for each applicant must be sent to the Concerto Competition by the application form deadline, postmarked on or before January 16, 2011. Students eligible for the National School Lunch Program may apply for financial aid (partial or full) for the $50 non-refundable entry fee.

All concerto movements and applicable cadenzas must be memorized, and students must bring one original score for their concerto (no unpermitted photocopies) to the competition. Students who do not play their concerto movement by memory will be disqualified and not eligible to be selected as a winner. Students who do not bring one original score for their concerto or who bring an unpermitted photocopy to the competition will be immediately disqualified and not permitted to play for the judges. In the case of works downloaded from an online source, a photocopy will be permitted with the appropriate license from the publishing company, but the photocopy must be cleared by the Concerto Competition Chair at least one week prior to the audition date; the use of any photocopied material without prior consent from the Concerto Competition Chair is not allowed.

The decisions of the judges are final. Judges are not obligated to select a winner in each category. Any teacher who at any time contacts a judge regarding this competition and/or its results will have ALL of his/her students disqualified from this competition. Any parent who at any time contacts a judge regarding this competition and/or its results will have his/her child disqualified from this competition.

The submitted Westside Music Foundation Online Application Form & Competition Agreement for the Robert Turner Piano Concerto Competition shall be deemed an acceptance and agreement of the applicant to the Competition Rules & Information stated on this page.

In the event of any dispute, claim, question, or disagreement arising from or relating to the terms and conditions of this Competition or the Competition Agreement, or the breach thereof, Westside Music Foundation shall use its best effort to settle the dispute, claim, question, or disagreement. To this effect, they shall consult and negotiate with each other in good faith, and recognizing their mutual interests, attempt to reach a just and equitable solution satisfactory to both parties. If they do not reach such solution within a period of sixty (60) days, then upon notice by either party to the other, all disputes, claims, questions, or differences shall be finally settled by arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association in accordance with the provisions of its Commercial Arbitration Rules.
