Competition Rules & Guidelines

Eligibility
To be eligible, the student must be in High School (grades 9-12) and age 18 or under as of January 1, 2017 and meet one of the following criteria:

  • Attend high school in the Los Angeles Westside, public or private.  If homeschooled, must live in the Los Angeles Westside.
  • Live in the Los Angeles Westside.
  • Study with a teacher who lives in the Los Angeles Westside.
  • Coached in a chamber ensemble by a teacher who lives in the Los Angeles Westside.
  • Study with a teacher who is a member of MTAC Santa Monica Bay, MTAC West Los Angeles, or CAPMT District 3.
  • Coached in a chamber ensemble by a teacher who is a member of MTAC Santa Monica Bay, MTAC West Los Angeles, or CAPMT District 3.

College students are NOT eligible, even if they make the age requirement.

Previous winners of this competition are NOT eligible.

Proof-of-Age document (birth certificate, student I.D. (with birth date), passport, or driver’s license) is required and must scanned/submitted during the online application process or copied/mailed by the postmark deadline.

Repertoire

  • Instrumentalists: one movement of a concerto or single-movement work with orchestra.
  • Vocalists: one concert aria or a group of shorter concert arias by the same composer.

Memorization
We will follow the MTAC Panel Guidelines for memorization, if they exist:

  • Winds/Brass: Memorization is optional, but STRONGLY encouraged.
  • Strings: Memorization is mandatory, including cadenza, if applicable.
  • Guitar: Memorization is mandatory, including cadenza, if applicable.
  • Percussion: Memorization is mandatory, including cadenza, if applicable.
  • Voice: Memorization is mandatory, including cadenza, if applicable.

Scores
NO UNPERMITTED PHOTOCOPIES.

  • Winds/Brass: students must bring one original score (no unpermitted photocopies) for the judges if their concerto movement is memorized.  In addition, the accompanist must also have an original score. Students must bring two original scores (no unpermitted photocopies), one for the judges and one for themselves to play from, if not memorized. In addition, the accompanist must also have an original score.
  • Strings: students must bring one original score (no unpermitted photocopies) for the judges. In addition, the accompanist must also have an original score.
  • Guitar: students must bring one original score (no unpermitted photocopies) for the judges. In addition, the accompanist must also have an original score.
  • Percussion: students must bring one original score (no unpermitted photocopies) for the judges. In addition, the accompanist must also have an original score.
  • Voice: students must bring one original score (no unpermitted photocopies) for the judges. In addition, the accompanist must also have an original score.

In the case of works downloaded from an online source, a print out will be permitted with the appropriate license/receipt from the publishing company, but the print out must be cleared by the Concerto Competition Chair prior to the audition date; the use of any print outs without prior consent from the Concerto Competition Chair is not allowed.

Accompanist
Please contact Dr. How if need help securing an accompanist for your competition audition.

  • Students must supply their own accompanist for their competition audition.
  • Students are responsible for paying their accompanist for both pre-competition rehearsals (if applicable) and their competition audition.

Fees
Entry fees for Fall 2016 are $60 (non-refundable).

  • Entry fees are paid during the online application process by PayPal/credit card or mailed by the postmark deadline.
  • Students eligible for the National School Lunch Program may apply for financial aid (partial or full) for the $60 non-refundable entry fee. Please contact Dr. How for details.

Other
Teachers may enter as many students as they wish. The decisions of the judges are final. The judges will determine how many winners are selected based on winners concert performance time restraints. Judges are not obligated to select any winners. Any teacher who at any time contacts a judge regarding this competition and/or its results will have ALL of his/her students disqualified from this competition. Any parent who at any time contacts a judge regarding this competition and/or its results will have his/her child disqualified from this competition.

Winners will have at least three rehearsals with full orchestra, tentatively scheduled for:

  • November 1, 2016 (Tuesday), 7:00 PM
  • November 8, 2016 (Tuesday), 7:00 PM
  • November 12, 2016 (Saturday), TBA
    and/or
    November 13, 2016 (Sunday), day of winners concert

The submitted Westside Music Foundation/MTAC Santa Monica Bay Online Application Form & Competition Agreement for the Santa Monica College Concerto Competition shall be deemed an acceptance and agreement of the applicant to the Competition Rules & Information stated on this page.

In the event of any dispute, claim, question, or disagreement arising from or relating to the terms and conditions of this Competition or the Competition Agreement, or the breach thereof, Westside Music Foundation/MTAC Santa Monica Bay shall use its best effort to settle the dispute, claim, question, or disagreement.  To this effect, they shall consult and negotiate with each other in good faith, and recognizing their mutual interests, attempt to reach a just and equitable solution satisfactory to both parties.  If they do not reach such solution within a period of sixty (60) days, then upon notice by either party to the other, all disputes, claims, questions, or differences shall be finally settled by arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association in accordance with the provisions of its Commercial Arbitration Rules.
