2009 PRACTICE-A-THON: Information Sheet

PURPOSE

The Westside Music Foundation (WMF) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) public benefit charity committed to the promotion of music education and community service.  The profits generated from the 2009 Practice-A-Thon will be used as follows:

75% will go to P.S. Arts, also a 501(c)(3) public benefit charity, toward the purchase of 1,000 recorders for 3rd- and 4th-grade Orff-Schulwerk music classes at various Title I schools in the West Los Angeles area, including Walgrove Elementary in Mar Vista, Coeur d’Alene Elementary in Venice, and Broadway Elementary in Venice; if more funds are collected than needed to purchase the recorders, the excess proceeds will be donated to the P.S. Arts instrument repair fund.  www.psarts.org

15% will go to the MTAC-WLA Music Students’ Service League (MSSL) to continue local community service music projects, including recitals in senior assisted-living homes, fund-raising concerts, and a used instrument donation drive.  www.mtacwla.org

10% will go to the Westside Music Foundation to continue support for its local music education programs, including the instrumental music program at St. Anne School (Title I) in Santa Monica, songwriting workshops for special education students in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District, and a chamber music series for the West Los Angeles community that features world-class musicians in a public venue with free admission for children, students, and adults.  www.westsidemusicfoundation.org

There are many wonderful things about this practicing project: any and every student can participate, students learn the importance of charity work, and it encourages a sense of community within our studios.

It is our duty and responsibility, as musicians and teachers, to cultivate future audiences; and what is more effective than a hands-on musical experience?!  Best of all, our students will be practicing music to raise funds for children to whom music making is a luxury.

INSTRUCTIONS

All students—any age, any instrument—are eligible to participate in this two-week fundraising event!  Students will record their practice hours and pledges on the Practice-A-Thon Sponsor Sheet.*  Students will record the number of hours practiced daily to the nearest ¼ hour in the spaces provided.  At the end of the Practice-A-Thon, students will add up their total hours practiced to the nearest ¼ hour.  We suggest that the two-week practice period be from March 20, 2009 to April 3, 2009 (the two weeks before the 2009 MTAC-WLA Certificate of Merit Evaluations), but students may choose any two-week period before April 26, 2009.  At the conclusion of the two-week practice period, participating teachers must:

1.      collect all pledge earnings

(checks made payable to Westside Music Foundation)

2.      collect Practice-A-Thon Sponsor Sheet(s)* from each participating student

3.      fill out the Practice-A-Thon Master Studio Pledge Sheet*

4.      send item nos. 1-3 above, in one envelope,

postmarked by April 30, 2009 or dropped off by May 3, 2009 to:
